Alfred Knobler, a ceramic engineer, established the Pilgrim Glass Corporation in Huntington, West Virginia, in 1949, taking over operations fully a year later. In its early years, Pilgrim specialized in hand-blown crackle glass, but later achieved major success with an extremely popular series of off-hand glass animals created by Italian artisans, the Moretti brothers. The company gained international recognition after plant manager Karel Konrad introduced cranberry glass in 1968, leading Pilgrim to become the largest producer of it globally. Pilgrim also produced cameo glass under the supervision of Kelsey Murphy and Robert Bomkamp before the company closed permanently in 2002.
