Àlvar Suñol Munoz-Ramos, professionally known as Alvar, was born on January 29th, 1935, in Montgat, a Catalan fishing village near Barcelona, Spain, and began painting at the age of twelve, accepted into the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Jorge in Barcelona at the age of seventeen. A year later he won the Young Painter’s Prize, with his work acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona, but after his first solo exhibition in 1957 Alvar briefly paused his career to serve in the Spanish military, returning to continue his studies at the Institut Français in Paris in 1959. There he met gallery director Juan Fuentes, who quickly sold Alvar’s first set of paintings in France, launching his international career. He married his childhood sweetheart, Rosella Berenguer, in 1960 and studied further at the École des Beaux Arts, joining the Spanish School of Paris alongside contemporaries such as Miró, Dalí, and Picasso, and in 1962 Alvar held his first solo exhibition in the United States. After a decade in Paris he returned to Spain, where he focused on lithographs until 2000 before shifting to large-scale paintings and murals, including public commissions in Tiana and his hometown of Montgat. His work spans watercolor, oil, ceramics, sculpture, engravings, and graphite drawings, and has been displayed in over 40 museums and 95 galleries globally. Recognized as one of the last great living European Modernists, Alvar’s career has continuously blended classical technique with modernist expression.
