Allen Hermes (1913–2004) was an Anglo-American painter and printmaker who moved to the United States at age 16, earned a scholarship to Syracuse University, and later studied art and architecture in Germany. After serving with the U.S. Corps of Engineers in Europe during World War II—where he painted portraits of fellow officers—he settled in Redding, Connecticut, dedicating himself to a diverse artistic career that included still lifes, landscapes, portraits, nudes, and works with mythological, religious, and allegorical themes. His works were exhibited in galleries from New York City to the Bahamas, earning a reputation for emotional depth and technical skill, often executed in a style he described as “closest to Baroque.”
