Alicemarie Mutrux was born in San Francisco, California in December 1939. Although little can be found about her early life she was constantly immersed in the arts of her community, and married a man named Philippe who she met at UC Berkeley in the late 1950s. They often rented out the bottom floor of their apartment building to artists like Nankoku Hidai and were good friends of the muralist Ann Rice O’Hanlon and the important Modernist photographer Imogen Cunningham, who took multiple studio photographs of Alicemarie and exchanged many letters with them in the 1960s and 70s. In her later years she took up art as well, working on landscapes, portraits, and animal paintings in oils and pastels. After Philippe died in 2008 she became a virtual recluse, passing away in September 2023.
