Alfonce Kontout (1917-2001) American, Moby Dick Scrimshaw on Bronze Stand. Carved into a young sperm whale tooth is an iconic interpretation of the novel's narrator, Ishmael, along with the peg-legged Captain Ahab, tied safely to the crow's nest to lookout for the captain's nemesis, with a broad scroll below containing the famous quote: "There she blows - it is Moby Dick." Signed beneath the scroll.

Alfonce Kontout was born in Waterbury, Connecticut on March 23rd, 1917 and became a general contractor after graduating from Watertown High School, enlisting to serve with the U.S. Navy during World War II where he discovered scrimshanding and engraving. After returning from the war he settled in Oakville, where he became renowned throughout New England for his masterful detailed scrollwork and inlaid relief scenes on antique and modern firearms, as well as producing scrimshaw scenes on whale bone and teeth. He passed away on April 21st, 2001 in his bed, and his pieces have been highly sought by collectors around the globe ever since.
