Alexander Kanchik was born in 1959 in Kishnev, Moldavia (now Chișinău, the capital of Moldova). He studied at Samokish Crimean Academy for Art from 1978 to 1984, during which he also served in the Russian military for three years, then attended the Academy of Theatre, Stage Design, and Cinematography in Leningrad, earning a Masters of Art in Painting in 1989. He worked for a year at the Luchafarul Theater in Kishinev and was offered a position painting for the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, but he fled civil unrest and immigrated to Israel in 1990, living and painting there ever since at his home studio and in various theaters in Tel Aviv.
