Albrecht Durer (1471-1528) German, Engraving "Nemesis" The Great Fortune 1501-1502. Hand laid paper, with a watermark - please refer to image 2. Nemesis was the Greek goddess of divine retribution, and Albrecht Dürer combined her identity here with Fortuna, the Roman goddess of victory or fortune, displayed as a winged figure on Roman coins. The piece was dry-cleaned to remove surface dirt, the old hinge was removed. The lead white (sulfide) paint was converted to stable white lead sulfate with stabilized hydrogen peroxide, which was flushed cut with ethanol on the vacuum suction table. A small corner loss was mended. It was de-acidified. Size: 13 x 9 in.
