Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) German, Woodcut on Laid Paper. Titled "The Betrayal of Christ, from The Small Passion". 1509.

Albrecht Dürer’s The Betrayal of Christ (1508) is a detailed woodcut that depicts the moment Judas betrays Jesus with a kiss in the Garden of Gethsemane. The composition captures intense emotion and drama, with soldiers seizing Christ while the apostles react with fear and confusion. Dürer’s mastery of line and texture emphasizes the tension and movement, while his careful attention to anatomy and drapery adds realism to the scene. Unsigned. Framed.

According to consignor it is inscribed verso with the title in German and the catalogue raisonné references Catalogue Raisonné - Hollstein VII 120.136.

Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) was a German painter, printmaker, and theorist, and the central figure of the Northern Renaissance, celebrated for his technical skill and intellectual depth. Born in Nuremberg, he transitioned from goldsmithing to painting and engraving, quickly gaining recognition for detailed prints that merged Gothic traditions with Renaissance ideals of proportion. His iconic works, like Melencolia I and The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, showcase both his artistic mastery and his deep engagement with humanist thought. Revered in his lifetime, Dürer's extensive travels and influential writings helped establish printmaking as a major art form.
