Alan Dowler Kamara (20th Century) Aboriginal, Block ink on parchment. Titled "Barramundi Dreaming".
This painting tells the sacred story of the Barramundi Fish Dreaming. The Barramundi is sacred to the Aboriginal people of North-East Arnhemlan and Australia and is hunted and killed to be used as a sacred food for the Initiation Ceremony of the young boys into manhood. The Barramundi fish is shown with an x-ray pattern on its body and this indicates that various parts of the fish are given to the men depending on their hierarchy in the tribe. Alan takes the ancient designs of his ancestors and creates them in a new medium on arch paper (parchment). He works with a water based powder paint which creates very strong color on the paper.
