Alain Bonnefoit was born in Montmartre, France in 1937. He studied at the École des Arts Appliqués starting in 1953, and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the Engraving and Sculpture Department, as well as exploring further techniques in studios in Brussels, Belgium. He spent the next several years working, traveling, and developing his artistic style, traveling south through Europe into Italy and then back north again. Between 1961 and 1963 he worked in the studio of sculptor Antoniucci Volti, who became his mentor. In 1964 he began focusing on what would become his signature figure: the female nude. In 1965 he moved to Tuscany, but kept his studio in Paris, devoting his time between the two cities ever since. In 1973 he took his first trip to Japan, where he discovered the technique of sumi-e. He made repeated visits to Japan over the next decade for further in-depth study, and is now a master of the technique. In the more than 40 years of his artistic career he has experimented with most visual mediums: mixed techniques on canvas, oil painting, original lithography and engraving, sumi-e, sculpture, and more. He has held solo exhibitions in Paris, Vichy, Toulouse, Le Havre, Bièvre, Metz, Venice, Pisa, Florence, Milan, Siena, Lille, and Grenoble, and had been exhibited alongside others in countries around the world, from Rome to Osaka, from Tahiti to New York City. He continues to work in paints and sculpture, although he spends most of his time at his studio in Italy for health reasons.
