This is an unusual oil on canvas by Albert Earl "Al" Hansen, an American artist from New York City who was associated with the Happenings movement, which basically was performance art. Hansen served in the army in World War II, and in 1945 he pushed a piano off a five-story building in Germany. This was the beginning of the Happenings movement. Hansen was also a member of Fluxus, a community of artists, composers, and designers who emphasized the artistic process over the finished product. His son, Bibbe, was a protege of Andy Warhol, and you can see Warhol's influence here in this wooden cut-out of a trolley car. It's a front view of the Riverside 666, a streetcar which belonged to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) in Boston in the 1960's. Riverside was the western terminus of the MBTA's Green Line branch near Newton, Mass. The piece is almost whimsical in nature. It is titled "Riverside Trolley" and is signed and dated on the back. It measures 17 3/4 x 12 1/4 in. wide. Provenance: the Hirsch estate.
