Raphael (1483–1520) was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance, celebrated for his clarity of form, balanced composition, and graceful figures. Born in Urbino, he trained under his father and later in the workshop of Perugino, quickly gaining recognition for his portraits, Madonnas, and large-scale frescoes. Raphael’s masterpieces, including the frescoes of the Stanze di Raffaello in the Vatican and The School of Athens, exemplify Renaissance ideals of harmony, perspective, and classical beauty. He also contributed significantly to architecture, serving as chief architect of St. Peter's Basilica. Despite his early death at 37, Raphael’s work profoundly influenced generations of artists and remains a cornerstone of Western art.
