Michele Felice Cornè (1752–1845) was a Neapolitan-born artist who became a prominent figure in early 19th-century American art. Born on the island of Elba, he emigrated to Salem, Massachusetts, in 1800 aboard the ship Mount Vernon, commanded by Elias Hasket Derby Jr. Cornè is renowned for his marine paintings, portraits, and decorative murals, including the notable 1810 mural cycle at the Sullivan-Dorr House in Providence, Rhode Island. His work often depicted naval battles of the War of 1812 and serene landscapes inspired by his Italian heritage. In 1822, he settled in Newport, Rhode Island, where he continued to paint until his death in 1845 at the age of 93. Cornè's legacy endures through his contributions to American folk and marine art, with his works housed in institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem.
