Marcel Lajos Breuer (1902-1981), known as Lajkó, was a Hungarian-born architect and designer whose career spanned Europe and the United States and whose work became emblematic of modernist and Brutalist architecture. A prodigy of the Bauhaus under Walter Gropius, he pioneered innovative furniture designs such as the Wassily Chair and experimented with bent plywood inspired by Alvar Aalto. Fleeing rising anti-Semitism, Breuer worked in London before emigrating to the U.S., where he chaired Harvard’s Graduate School of Design and collaborated with Gropius to mentor a generation of American architects. His architectural achievements include the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, Saint John’s Abbey in Minnesota, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, showcasing his mastery of concrete and modernist forms. Awarded the AIA Gold Medal in 1968, Breuer maintained an influential New York practice until his death in a Brutalist apartment he had designed for himself.
