Jean-Baptiste Isabey (1767–1855) was a celebrated French painter, miniaturist, and printmaker who rose to prominence after training in his native Nancy and later under Jacques-Louis David in Paris. Over a career spanning the late 18th to mid-19th centuries, he became one of Europe’s most sought-after portraitists, producing refined miniatures, official portraits, and lithographs for royalty and political figures, including Marie Antoinette, Napoleon Bonaparte, and members of the imperial court. In addition to portraiture, Isabey worked as a draughtsman and ceremonial designer—famously preparing drawings for Napoleon’s coronation—and contributed designs for porcelain and theater productions. Renowned for his delicacy, precision, and ability to capture character, he maintained favor across multiple French regimes and helped shape the transition from Neoclassicism toward early Romantic aesthetics.
