Jack Freidin was born on January 16th, 1930 in New York City to Jewish parents who had immigrated from Germany. He showed an early interest in design and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the Pratt Institute in 1951. His masters was in planning from Columbia University, obtained in 1954, with postgraduate work in the extremely new field of Computer-Aided Design at Harvard University. Always embracing new ideas and cutting edge concepts, he worked primarily in New England, freelancing for various companies in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, with his most famous Mid Century Modern furniture designs made for Pace and Knoll, including an iconic glass topped table with an X-shaped chrome support base. He was the recipient of numerous architectural and design awards, including from National Association of Home Builders, The Queens County Chamber of Commerce, Ponderosa Pine Wood Company, and a permanent exhibition of his work at the Museum of Modern Art. He was a lifelong member of the American Institute of Architects as well as the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards and the American Arbitration Association. He taught for over a decade at the Pratt Institute, where he met and married his wife, fellow designer Marta Neufeld, in 1966. For much of the latter part of his life he lectured and worked as a critic for several design digests and major newspapers, and passed away on February 14th, 2004, mourned as one of the last remaining advocates of mid 20th Century and Brutalist architectural design.
