Heinrich Aldegrever (1502–c. 1555) was a German engraver and painter associated with the Little Masters, a group of printmakers known for their small-scale, highly detailed engravings. Influenced by Albrecht Dürer, Aldegrever brought a refined precision to his work, often incorporating intricate ornamentation and classical motifs. He was also sympathetic to the ideals of the Protestant Reformation, producing portraits of Martin Luther and religious prints aligned with reformist thought. His engravings covered a wide range of themes, including mythology, allegory, and moral subjects, and were widely circulated across Europe. Aldegrever’s legacy lies in his technical skill and his contribution to the spread of Renaissance and Reformation ideas through printmaking.
