Gustav Richter (1823 – 1884) was a German figure and portrait painter associated with the academic tradition of 19th-century European art. Born in Berlin, he studied at the Berlin Academy, continued his training in Paris under Léon Cogniet, and spent several years in Rome refining his style. Richter initially gained recognition for large historical and decorative works, including frescoes for Berlin’s Neues Museum, but later achieved greater success as a portraitist. Renowned for his elegant depictions of aristocratic and royal sitters, he became one of Germany’s leading society painters, producing notable portraits of Emperor Wilhelm I, Empress Augusta, and Queen Louise. His mature works are admired for their refined characterization, technical skill, and polished realism, securing his place among the prominent German portrait painters of the late 19th century.
