Gustav Gurschner was born on September 28th, 1873 in Mühldorf, Bavaria (now part of Germany), the son of surveyor who sent him to train in wood sculpture at the Italian Bolzano Technical School before he studied under August Kühne and Otto König at the Kunstgewerbeschule (School of Arts and Crafts) in Vienna, Austria. After a breakout encounter with Kaiser Franz Joseph in 1896 he and his wife Alice Pollak moved to Paris where he embraced the Art Nouveau movement, eventually returning to Vienna and becoming a leading figure in the Vienna Secession and later the Hagenbund Group. His diverse portfolio included large-scale marble monuments and intricate portrait busts of European nobility, as well as automotive race prizes reflecting his passion as an early sports motorist. Beyond art, Gurschner led a colorful military life, commanding a volunteer corps in Albania and serving as a reserve officer during World War I. Despite a 1915 report erroneously claiming he had died in battle, he lived until August 2nd, 1970, leaving behind a rich legacy of sculptures and decorative metalwork that are still highly valued by collectors.
