Giovanni Bellini (c. 1430–1516) was one of the most influential painters of the Italian Renaissance, celebrated for transforming Venetian art through his pioneering use of color and atmosphere. Born into a family of painters—his father Jacopo and brother Gentile were also artists—Bellini helped establish Venice as a major center of Renaissance painting. His work bridged the Gothic traditions of his predecessors with the humanism of the Renaissance, using oil paints to achieve luminous tones and delicate gradations of light that gave his figures a striking sense of naturalism. Religious subjects dominated his career, from altarpieces like the San Zaccaria Altarpiece to intimate Madonnas, but he also painted portraits that captured psychological depth. As teacher to masters such as Giorgione and Titian, Bellini left a legacy that extended well beyond his own lifetime, defining the Venetian school’s glowing, atmospheric style.
