George Lambert (1700-1765) was an English painter who gained a reputation for his high-quality landscapes after studying under Warner Hassells and John Wootton. He also had a celebrated career as a scene-painter, notably working with John Rich at the Lincoln's Inn Fields and Covent Garden Theatres, though most of this highly lauded scenery was tragically destroyed by fire in 1808. Lambert's jovial nature and love of beefsteak led to his founding of "The Beefsteak Club," a famous nightly meeting of artistic and theatrical figures. A key figure in the London art world, he co-founded the Incorporated Society of Artists of Great Britain and served as its first president.
