Fernando Botero (1932–2023) was a Colombian painter, sculptor, and draftsman whose instantly recognizable style, often called “Boterismo,” emphasized enlarged, voluptuous forms and monumental volume. Born in Medellín, Botero studied in Spain and Italy, where he absorbed the influence of European Old Masters, while also drawing on Colombian culture, Latin American traditions, and popular imagery. He began making sculpture seriously in Paris in 1973, creating bronze and marble works characterized by rounded, exaggerated forms, smooth surfaces, and a powerful sense of mass. His subjects ranged from animals and still lifes to musicians, dancers, historical figures, and monumental nudes, while his paintings and drawings often combined humor and irony with observations on power, violence, and everyday life. Internationally celebrated, Botero placed large-scale sculptures in public spaces around the world and became one of Latin America’s most recognizable artists.
