African Elephant's Tooth from 1900's

This is an elephant molar that came from the Central African Republic. The massive tooth had long roots which sat down in the jawbone and could last for about 60 years before the tooth started to break down. The elephant is a herbivore, so the plates on the molar were used for grinding and chewing food, and the dark brown color indicates the gum line. An adult elephant will go through six sets of these teeth in a lifetime. The tooth measures 5 1/2 in. high and 6 3/4 in. across. Try going to a dentist with that. From the Dale Baker collection.
