The Asante, or Ashanti, are an Akan ethnic group native to Ghana’s Ashanti Region, speaking Twi as their primary language. They founded the Ashanti Empire in 1670, with the city of Kumase established in 1680 by Asantehene Osei Kofi Tutu I, becoming a strategic trade hub that fueled the empire’s growth. Despite nearly a century of war with the United Kingdom, they retained cultural and political cohesion, regaining full autonomy as the Kingdom of Asante in 1935. Today, Kumase serves as both a financial and cultural center, while the Asante’s rich traditions in cuisine, music, literature, fashion, and crafts continue to influence Ghana and the wider world.
