Aesthetic Movement Style Two-Tier Stone and Metal Occasional Side Table. Closely resembling designs by E. W. Godwin from the late 19th Century, featuring bronze supports designed to resemble bamboo-turned legs and ebonized wood tops and bottoms, with parcel-gilt or contrasting geometric inlays in the stone above.

Size: 20 x 14 1/2 x 23 1/2 In.

The Aesthetic Period or Aesthetic Movement was a cultural phenomenon in the late 19th Century (roughly 1865-1900) that championed “art for art’s sake,” emphasizing beauty and artistic expression over social or political messaging. Originating in Britain and spreading to America, it reacted against Industrialism and Victorian norms by valuing craftsmanship and individuality, influencing decorative arts like furniture and home design, and incorporating elements from Japanese art (Japonisme) into its styles, including ebonized wood and stylized multi-ethnic motifs. It roughly overlaps with the seminal Impressionism movement in the art world, and heavily influenced both the Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau periods as well.
