Abstract Expressionism was an influential post–World War II art movement that emerged in the United States during the 1940s and 1950s, centered primarily in New York City. Characterized by large-scale, energetic, and often emotionally charged works, it emphasized spontaneous, gestural brushstrokes and the act of painting itself as a form of personal expression. Artists like Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Mark Rothko became central figures, each developing distinct styles ranging from dynamic splatters to meditative color fields. The movement marked the first time American artists achieved international prominence, shifting the art world's focus from Europe to the U.S.
