This is a pencil drawing of a nude by Abraham Walkowitz, a Russian born artist who emigrated to the United States with his mother when he was a child and came to be considered an American modernist. He worked closely with the noted photographer Alfred Stieglitz; his gallery was a meeting place for the artists who were forerunners of modern art in this country. In his teens he began to make sketches of immigrants in New York's Jewish ghetto, and when he returned to Europe, he met Isadora Duncan, an avant-garde American dancer in the early 1900's, He produced over 5000 drawings of the famous dancer, and they remain a permanent historical record of her career. The drawing is signed in pencil near the bottom. The overall size is 16 1/2 x 13 1/4 in. wide and the sight size is 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 in. wide.
