A New Version of the Psalms of David 1760. This book is titled “A New Version Of The Psalms Of David, Fitted to the Tunes Used in Churches”, written by N. Brady, D.D. Chaplain in Ordinary, and N. Tate, Esq; Poet-Laureate to his Majesty, and printed in London in 1760 by J. and J. Marsh, for the Company of Stationers, and the bottom of the title page says “And are to be sold at Stationers-Hall, near Ludgate, and by most Booksellers.” The book has raised bands and gilt decorations on the spine, gilt-decorated borders with gilt corner devices on the covers, marbled boards with narrow gilt dentelles and the bookplate of G. W. Prothero on the front paste-down, a frontispiece dated 1696 from the King saying the book is fit to be used in all churches, then the title page, a leaf from H. London saying he recommends the use of this new version of the Psalms in his diocese, a two-page Table showing where to find each psalm, one leaf about Directions about the Tunes and Measures for the psalms, the text runs to page 215, all the edges are gilt, and the book starts at the first psalm (Psalm I) and goes all the way to Psalm CL (Psalm 150). Poet Laureate Nahum Tate (1652 - 1715) was born Nathan Teate in Dublin and was made Poet Laureate in 1692, and he collaborated with Nicholas Brady (1659 - 1726), the Anglican divine born in County Cork, Ireland, on this metrical version of the Psalms. The psalms are in English metre, and why it’s called a metrical, almost musical, version of the Psalms, and shortly after it came out in 1696, it replaced the older version of the metrical Psalms by Sternhold and Hopkins; this book is often referred to just as Tate and Brady (after the authors), and it includes some metres that were not included in the older version or the Scottish Psalter. George Walter Prothero (1838 - 1922) was an English historian and writer who served as President of the Royal Historical Society in the early 1900’s. The book measures 5 3/8 x 3 in. wide and is in good condition for its age. The binding is tight, the pages and text are clean, with just wisps of toning here and there, there’s rubbing and wear on the spine, rubbing along the edges of the spine, wear on the front cover at the bottom tip and the tip is slightly turned in, and the gilt has faded a bit, and a rare 18th-century printing of the Psalms of David. We’ve found only nine copies offered for sale on the rare book website we use, ranging in price from $50 to $1500 - the last is for a Boston version from 1778 - and one copy goes for $16,000 - a Dublin edition from 1751 that has all the psalms included (from the first psalm to number 150) - and some of the those copies have stains, no title page, missing endpapers, and detached covers. This copy is pretty clean, with the title page, all the endpapers, and the covers are clearly together and intact, and a rare 18th-century printing of the Psalms of David. #221 #4991
