A. Kirchener was likely an independent artist selling work on the streets of post-WWII Paris, where informal art markets thrived amid the city’s recovery. The piece in question—a quirky, unauthorized rendition of Disney’s Seven Dwarves dated 1945—suggests the artist tapped into American pop culture to appeal to tourists and Allied soldiers stationed or passing through France. Rather than a formally trained or widely recognized painter, Kirchener was probably part of a wave of street artists producing quick, charming, and often bootleg art for a living in the chaotic but creatively fertile atmosphere of postwar Europe.
