The Florida Highwaymen were a group of African American artists who emerged in the 1950s, painting vivid, impressionistic landscapes of Florida’s natural beauty. Unable to exhibit in traditional galleries due to segregation, they sold their works directly from car trunks along highways, earning their name. Led by Alfred Hair and Harold Newton, the group developed a distinctive style featuring bold colors, dramatic skies, and lush scenery, often painted quickly on inexpensive materials like Upson board. Over time, their work gained recognition for its historical and artistic significance, and in 2004, the original Highwaymen were inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame.
A.J. Brown is a second-generation Florida Highwaymen painter known for her vivid, impressionistic depictions of Florida’s landscapes. Born in Virginia and raised in Miami’s historic Overtown neighborhood, she later found inspiration in Fort Pierce, where many of the original Highwaymen artists worked. Mentored by Johnny Daniels, Willie Daniels, Al Black, and James Gibson, Brown has become a prominent figure in preserving and evolving the Highwaymen legacy. Notably the only female among the second-generation artists, her work captures Florida’s natural beauty with bold colors, dramatic lighting, and a deep respect for the tradition she carries forward.
