(9) Spode Porcelain Coat of Arms of New York Dinner Plates. The image in the center shield displays the sun rising over the Hudson River with a masted ship and a sloop, representing inland and foreign commerce. An American eagle atop a globe showing the Atlantic hemisphere crests the shield, with Lady Liberty on the left holding a staff with a Phrygian cap and Lady Justice on the right, blindfolded and holding a sword and scales. The red banner at the bottom displays the state motto "Excelsior," meaning "Ever Upward." Marked by Spode on the backs.

Founded in 1770 in Stoke-on-Trent by Josiah Spode, the Spode pottery firm revolutionized the English ceramics industry by perfecting underglaze transfer printing and developing the standard formula for bone china. Following early family management and a transition to the Copeland family in the 19th Century, the business retained its renowned heritage brand name while producing iconic lines like Blue Italian. Despite facing 20th Century economic and wartime challenges, the historic enterprise underwent several restructurings and mergers, including joining Royal Worcester in 2006. The company was ultimately acquired by the Portmeirion Group in 2008, which consolidated its legacy manufacturing operations in Stoke-on-Trent.
