Moser A.S. is a luxury glass manufacturer based in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic (previously Bohemia, Austria-Hungary). The company is known for manufacturing stemware, decorative glassware, glass gifts and various art engravings. Ludwig Moser opened the company in 1857 as a polishing and glass engraving workshop, and in 1873 he was awarded a medal for merit at the Vienna International Exhibition for their work. This led to his company being appointed the exclusive supplier of glass to Emperor Franz Joseph I, and their lead-free glass won further awards in Paris and Chicago throughout the 1880s and 90s. In 1893 they absorbed a Germany factory already employing 400 people, renaming the company to Glassworks Ludwig Moser & Sons as his sons Gustav and Rudolf became equal partners. After Ludwig’s death in 1916 his son Leo took over the company and expanded it significantly, introducing the iconic Fipop design as well as Art Nouveau pieces with surface decoration of natural themes and simple cameo glass. The worldwide Depression in the 1930s reduced the staff to 240 and led to Leo’s resignation, and in 1938 the Moser family fled during the annexation. The Nazis used the factory as a supply depot, and the Communists nationalized the Czech glass industry in 1948 under the name Crystalex, although due to Moser’s international reputation the family was allowed to retain some independence. Today, a factory museum shows the story of the company with more than 2,000 pieces on display. Besides having four retail outlets in the Czech Republic, Moser has a worldwide network of retailers, with their US distribution company originally established in Virginia in 1957. Every piece of glass that is made by Moser is still hand made, and they remain one of the world’s most famous and collectable brands of luxury crystal.
