Swarovski is an Austrian producer of crystal and glass based in Wattens in Tyrol (previously Austria), founded in 1895 by Daniel Swarovski. In 1899 they began to use the edelweiss flower in their logo and expanded to France, where it was known as Pierres Taillées du Tyrol (“Cut stones from Tyrol”), and in 1919 Swarovski founded Tyrolit, selling grinding, sawing, drilling, and dressing tools, as well as becoming a popular supplier of heavy tools and machines. In 1935 Swarovski’s son Wilhelm created a customized pair of binoculars, which led to the launch of Swarovski Optik in 1956 after Daniel Swarovski’s death, now a major manufactures optical instruments such as binoculars, spotting scopes, rifle scopes, and telescopes. In 1977 Swarovski entered the American jewelry market and became one of the most sought-after luxury glass makers in the world, and remained a family-run business until 2020 when COVID and the economic downturn led to massive executive changes along with closing 750 retail stores and laying off 6,000 employees globally.
