Frogs are a diverse and largely carnivorous group of short-bodied, tailless amphibians composing the order Anura which first evolved at least 250 million years ago. Their incredibly diverse proliferation, ranging from the tropics to subarctic regions, has made them important to humans in a variety of ways over time, as food, symbolic figures, and literary and religious subjects. They have also been seen as environmental bellwethers since the time of Ancient Egypt, with declines in frog populations often viewed as early warning signs of environmental damage. Frog legs are considered a delicacy in much of the world, with Indonesia the largest exporter of frog meat, sending more than 5,000 tons each year to France, Belgium, and Luxembourg, primarily. Frogs have served as experimental animals throughout the history of science, and their extraordinarily diverse array of toxins has become an invaluable pillar of pharmaceutical research. They were the key to the 18th Century discovery of the link between electricity and the nervous system by Luigi Galvani, as well as the earliest successful attempts at modern cloning by Robert Briggs and Thomas J. King using somatic cell nuclear transfer. Frogs have been featured in mythology, fairy tales, and popular culture around the world, including the Grimm Brothers’ tale “The Frog Prince” and the Greek play “The Frogs” by Aristophanes. In traditional Chinese myths the world rests on a giant frog, who would try to swallow the moon, causing the lunar eclipse, and the Mayans saw frogs as representatives of the god Chaac, who controlled water, crops, fertility and birth. Due to their poison, nighttime presence, and loud noises most species make, Medieval Europeans came to associate frogs and toads with evil and witchcraft. In modern culture, however, frogs have become popular figures for sculptures, carvings, plushies, and children’s toys, and usually take on a comedic or hapless role, such as Mark Twain’s eponymous “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” Mr. Toad of the 1908 novel “The Wind in the Willows,” and the pragmatic everyman protagonist of the Muppets, Kermit the Frog.
