One of the most common names in American silver history is Rogers. This had led to a great deal of confusion among collectors about the various firms bearing the name, be they makers of coin, sterling, or silverplate wares. Although quite a few were directly connected by family relationships or marriage, several were not, but general genealogical research indicates that most (it not all of them) can trace their lineage back to silversmiths and workers out of Wales and southern England, with their descendants bringing their traditions to the new world and settling in New England and the Southeast, precisely where so many silver manufacturers of the 19th and 20th Centuries were located. Among the many famous and important makers were William Rogers Manufacturing, Rogers Brothers, Rogers & Cole, Church & Rogers, F.B. Rogers Silver Company, N.B. Rogers Silver Plate Company, Rogers, Smith & Company, Simeon L. & George H. Rogers Company, and a host of others. However, all companies that bore the name have since been closed or absorbed into larger conglomerations over time, like Oneida and International Silver, with none remaining in production in the 21st Century.
