Oneida Limited originated from the utopian Oneida Community established in New York in 1848, with its business operations beginning in 1880 and silver-plated flatware production starting in 1899. The company became a leader in the tableware industry, known for its innovative marketing and successful transition to stainless steel flatware in 1961, eventually supplying over half of all flatware purchased in the United States by the 1980s. Following economic challenges in the early 2000s, Oneida was taken private in 2006 and, though its brand persists, it no longer operates manufacturing in the U.S. and has gone through several corporate ownership changes.
