(5) Mesoamerican Zapotec Animal Motif Hand Clay Pipes. Lot of five Mesoamerican Zapotec clay pipes in the form of various animals, including birds, fish, and armadillo.

Zapotec pipes are ancient ceramic artifacts crafted by the Zapotec civilization, which flourished in the Valley of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. These pipes, often intricately modeled and decorated, were used in ritual contexts and may have played a role in religious ceremonies involving the smoking of tobacco or other sacred substances. Many feature stylized human or animal figures, with expressive faces and elaborate headdresses, reflecting the Zapotec’s rich mythological and symbolic traditions. The craftsmanship reveals a high level of skill in ceramic work, with some examples dating as far back as 500 BCE. Zapotec pipes offer valuable insights into the ceremonial life and artistic expression of one of Mesoamerica’s most influential early cultures.
