19th Century coin silver flatware, manufactured by Midge & Co (?). Lot of 16 forks, 11 demitasse spoons, 10 table spoons, 7 butter knives. In Hagerty silverware cloth. Olive Pattern COIN Silver.

Coin silver is the material that creates silver dollars and other silver currency pieces. It is a standardized composite composed of a limited number of non-silver alloys such as nickel and copper, making it more valuable than alloys containing other metals in higher quantities. Silver coins in the United States have to be at least a .900 fine, meaning it cannot be less than 90% pure silver. Sterling silver is more valuable than coin silver because it has a required purity of 92.5%. In some coins, you can find sterling silver, the most famous being the old British pound sterling, although the modern British pound no longer contains sterling silver. Coin silver was not standardized until 1868, meaning it is possible to find coin silver alloys with as little as 75%.
