Madame Alexander Doll Company is an American manufacturer of collectible dolls, founded in 1923 by Bertha “Beatrice” Alexander Behrman (1895-1990) in New York City. Madame Alexander, as she came to be known, created the first doll based on a licensed character: Scarlett O’Hara, from the book and movie Gone With the Wind. She was also one of the early creators of mass-produced dolls of living people, with dolls of the Dionne quintuplets in 1936 and a set of thirty-six Queen Elizabeth II dolls to commemorate the 1953 coronation celebrations in Britain. The company’s most popular doll, the 8-inch Wendy doll, was introduced in the early 1950s. Their first fashion dolls, Cissy and Pussycat, were vinyl baby dolls introduced in the mid 50s. Due to their increasing popularity in that decade, the Alexandra Fairchild Ford line of 16-inch collectible fashion dolls were created for adult collectors in the late 50s, starting a trend that has continued ever since. Alexander also created many topical doll series, such as “The First Ladies of the United States,” “The Opera Series,” and “Fairy Tale Series.” Madame Alexander sold her company to three private investors just two years before her death, remaining as a design consultant until the end. Two of her dolls were included in the Smithsonian Institution and are on permanent exhibition at the Congressional Club in Washington, D.C.and the Children’s Trust Museum in New Delhi. Her daughter Mildred joined the restructured Alexander Doll Company in 1990, and her grandson William served as the president until 1994. In 2009 the company began creating dolls for Dollie & Me, matching clothing for girls and dolls, and in 2012 the Alexander Doll Company was sold entirely to Kahn Lucas, owner of Dollie & Me. Today the Madame Alexander Doll Club is separate from Alexander Doll Company, but the company creates limited-edition dolls for club events and conventions held all over the United States, with thousands of members throughout the country and abroad.

While the dolls are all in excellent condition, retaining their original sealed accessories, white ribbon ties, and protective hair nets, the boxes are opened and shows signs of wear and tear, particularly on "Grandma's Little Honey."
