The Goddess of Speed is an elegant Art Deco-style hood ornament designed in 1938 by John D. Wilson and first appearing around 1939 on select Packard models. It depicts a gracefully kneeling winged female figure with arms extended forward, holding a miniature car wheel, evoking both motion and modernity. The design is often interpreted as a nod to the Greek goddess Nike, embodying speed, victory, and graceful power. While its technical name is “Goddess of Speed,” its playful nickname “donut chaser” stems from the wheel resembling a donut and has become part of automotive lore. This ornament remains a beloved emblem of Packard’s luxury and the bold stylistic flourish of early automotive design.
