(4) Vintage Chinese Carved Snuff Bottles. Lot comprised of four vintage Chinese snuff bottles of various materials with designs carved in high relief, including foliate decoration, figures, and landscape. Unmarked.

Chinese snuff bottles are small, intricately crafted containers that were used during the Qing Dynasty to hold powdered tobacco, which was believed to have medicinal properties. Because smoking tobacco was forbidden under imperial law, snuff—taken nasally—became a fashionable and acceptable alternative among the elite. These bottles were made from a variety of luxurious materials including glass, porcelain, jade, agate, and even carved amber or ivory, often adorned with miniature paintings, calligraphy, or symbolic motifs. Highly collectible, snuff bottles served not only as personal accessories but also as expressions of status, artistry, and cultural refinement. Their small scale required exceptional craftsmanship, and the act of offering snuff became a refined gesture of courtesy and social grace in Qing-era society.
