Richard Earlom (1743–1822) was a British mezzotint engraver renowned for his skill in reproducing paintings and drawings with remarkable tonal subtlety. Born in London, Earlom trained under the engraver William Pether and quickly became known for his ability to capture delicate gradations of light and shadow, making him one of the leading mezzotint artists of his era. He produced engravings after works by Old Masters such as Claude Lorrain and Rembrandt, as well as contemporary British painters, and was employed by the British Museum to reproduce its collection of drawings, creating the influential Liber Veritatis series after Claude Lorrain. Earlom’s prints were celebrated for their precision, elegance, and the ability to translate the painterly qualities of original works into the medium of print, securing his reputation as a master of mezzotint engraving.
