John Yellen was an American designer active in the mid‑20th century (1950s–1960s), known for sculptural and modern seating designs including chairs, stools, and barstools. His work for the I.V. Chair Corporation featured materials and combinations such as walnut, chrome, tubular steel, vinyl, and leather, often with striking shapes and bold visual character. Examples of his pieces—such as wide-seat stools in vinyl upholstery atop sculptural walnut/chrome bases—have been offered at prominent auctions and vintage markets with values typically ranging from about $2,500 to $6,000. Though relatively obscure in mainstream design histories, Yellen’s seating is cherished in vintage design circles for its craftsmanship, distinctive forms, and collectible mid-century aesthetic.
