Théophile Alexandre Steinlen (1859-1923) was a Swiss-born French Art Nouveau painter, printmaker, and politically engaged illustrator known for his depictions of Montmartre life. After studying painting at the University of Lausanne he moved with his wife to Paris in his early twenties and quickly became an integral part of the artistic community at Le Chat Noir cabaret, where he began creating commercial poster art. A prolific contributor to magazines like Le Rire and Gil Blas, Steinlen produced hundreds of illustrations that often criticized social ills, frequently under a pseudonym to avoid pressure from police and politicians, as well as limited sculptures of his beloved cat and paintings of rural landscapes, flowers, and nudes that were a part of the Salon des Indépendants throughout the 1890s. His influential works are displayed in numerous museums worldwide to this day, including the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
