(4) Chinese Elaborately Carved Wood Nesting Tables. Group of four Chinese carved wood nesting tables, with detailed carvings of fruiting grape vines along apron and down legs.

Chinese nesting tables are a set of progressively smaller tables designed to fit neatly one beneath the other, combining practicality with elegant craftsmanship. Originating in the Qing dynasty and popular among the scholar and merchant classes, these tables were typically made from fine hardwoods such as rosewood, huanghuali, or zitan, and often featured restrained yet refined ornamentation—like pierced aprons, carved floral motifs, or subtle inlay work. Valued for their space-saving versatility, nesting tables could be separated for use during tea ceremonies, scholarly activities, or social gatherings, then neatly tucked away to maintain an uncluttered interior. Their design reflects the Chinese appreciation for harmony, balance, and functional beauty within the domestic setting.
