(4) Chinese Celadon Bowls with Bronze Rim . Lot comprised of four bowls with crackled celadon glaze, bronze rims.
Size: 2 1/2 x 6 1/4 x 6 1/4 in.
Chinese celadon glaze ceramics are celebrated for their soft, jade-like surfaces in shades of pale green to bluish-gray, achieved through iron oxide in the glaze fired in a reduction kiln. First developed in the Eastern Han dynasty (25–220 CE) and reaching refinement during the Song dynasty (960–1279), celadon embodied the Chinese aesthetic ideal of understated elegance and harmony with nature. Famous kilns such as Longquan in Zhejiang produced wares with thick, lustrous glazes that pooled beautifully in carved or molded designs, creating subtle depth and translucence. Celadon’s resemblance to prized jade made it especially valued for ritual and court use, while its serene, waterlike tones resonated with both Confucian restraint and Daoist naturalism. Widely exported to Korea, Japan, and the Islamic world, celadon became one of China’s most influential ceramic traditions, admired for its balance of technical mastery and quiet beauty.
