(3) Spanish Porcelain Apothecary Jars. Three ornate antique apothecary jars with gilded details, once used to store medicinal herbs, are depicted in the image. The jars feature intricate decorations of palm trees, snakes (resembling caduceuses), and mortar and pestle symbols, common motifs in early medical practices. The jars are labeled in primarily Spanish: 'sim. membrill' (Simple quince), 'esperm ballen' (Spermaceti), and 'nuez cipres' (Cyprus nuts). Sim might be an abbreviation of the latin word simplex. These jars offer a glimpse into the diverse natural remedies employed in historical medicine. Historically, quince has been used for digestion, spermaceti (a solid wax from sperm whales) for emollients, and cypress nuts for skin and respiratory ailments.
