Dirty Dog Pottery is a husband-and-wife team of potters located in Brooksville, Florida. Patrick Bates was born in 1970 in Bensalem Township, Pennsylvania, the son of a military veteran with a passion for photography. His appreciation of the arts inspired Patrick as a child, but it was not until he suffered a career-ending injury while playing sports at the University of South Florida in Tampa that he began to explore it on his own, using clay throwing as a therapeutic healing process. Jacquelyn Hil-dee Bates (nee Fisher) was born in 1973 in Preston, Idaho, the daughter of dairy farmers. The difficult rural life instilled in her a strong work ethic, and after her parents separated she moved to Spring Hill, Florida, where she discovered a love for art in high school. Clay quickly became her favorite medium because of the labor and attention to detail involved, and she spent a year at the University of South Florida before studying at Cottey College in Missouri. Following a professor to the University of New Mexico, she spent a year engrossed in the pottery techniques of the Southwest Native American tribes, before returning to finish her BFA at USF in 1997. She began teaching art for the Hernando County School District, where she met and married Patrick. Together they opened Dirty Dog Pottery in nearby Weeki Wachee in the early 2010s, jointly crafting bowls, vases, and other forms and traveling the country attending art fairs and giving lectures on the history and process of sculpture.
