"Feinsilber Auflage" describes items where precious silver (Feinsilber) is applied as a decorative layer (Auflage) onto another material, most commonly glass or porcelain, a technique for creating luxurious decorative items without using solid silver. While the concept of applying silver to other materials is old, the technique became perfected with the advent of electro-plating in the 1840s and was used to produce high-quality decorative objects like vases, baskets, and glassware throughout the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. One of the largest purveyors of this particular technique was Deyhle Gebrüder, founded in Schwäbisch Gmünd in the German state of Baden-Wurttemberg in 1820 by brothers Christian Wilhelm and Gottlob Karl Deyhle. It remained one of the oldest and largest silverware factories in Gmünd until its closure at the end of the 1990s, by which point the style had fallen out of favor in the face of modernized techniques and materials.
