(3) Oxford Book of English Verse, Quiller-Couch, 1919 - 1930. These three books are all titled “The Oxford Book of English Verse 1250 - 1900”, written by Arthur Quiller Couch and published between 1919 and 1930. The first edition of this title was published in 1900, and the books are in fine bindings by Morrell, Riviere, and Sangorski and Sutcliffe. The first, “The Oxford Book of English Verse 1250 - 1900 Chosen & Edited by Arthur Quiller Couch”, was published in Oxford at the Clarendon Press in 1919 and is in a fine binding by Morrell of London. It has five raised bands, with gilt lettering and six gilt compartments on the spine, triple gilt-fillets on the cover, wide gilt dentelles and pastel colors on marbled endpapers, it is 1082 pages long, including the Index, and all the edges are gilt; the book measures 6 7/8 x 4 3/4 in. wide, with a tight binding and clean pages and text, slight rubbing on the spine and on the gilt borders, small chips on the edges of the title page and dedication page, the spine is faded a bit, and still a very attractive copy. The second copy of “The Oxford Book of English Verse 1250 - 1900, Chosen & Edited by Arthur Quiller Couch” was published in Oxford at the Clarendon Press in 1925 and is in a fine binding by Riviere & Son, with five raised bands, gilt lettering, gilt devices and six gilt-ruled compartments on the spine, elaborate gilt tooling on the covers, gilt fillet borders with beautiful marbled endpapers, it is 1084 pages long, including the Index, and all the edges are gilt; the book measures 6 5/8 x 4 1/4 in. wide, with a tight binding and clean pages and text, there are folds or creases on the edges of some pages in the middle of the book, and still an attractive book. The last copy of “The Oxford Book of English Verse 1250 - 1900, Chosen & Edited by Arthur Quiller Couch” was published in Oxford at the Clarendon Press in 1930, and it’s in a fine binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, with five raised bands, gilt titles and elaborate gilt tooling and “1930” on the spine, gilt borders and gilt lettering on the covers, gilt borders surrounding marbled endpapers, “Sangorski & Sutcliffe” in small gilt letters at the bottom of the front paste-down and a small bookshop label on the front free endpaper, twelve pages for the Preface and Contents, and 1084 pages of text, including the Index, and all the edges are gilt; the book measures 6 1/2 x 4 1/4 in. wide, with light rubbing at the crown and heel and at the tips, and a very attractive copy of the book. Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch (1863 - 1944) was a British writer who published under the pseudonym Q. Although a prolific novelist, he is remembered mainly for “The Oxford Book of English Verse 1250 - 1900” and for his literary criticism. He influenced many who never met him, and this title was a favorite of John Mortimer's fictional character Horace Rumpole. The book was an anthology of English poetry, first published by the Oxford University Press in 1900, and sold close to half a million copies in its first edition. #240 #1689
